Teruel · Aragon
Teruel
The smallest and one of the most isolated of Spain's provincial capitals, rivalled only by Seville as the home of Mudéjar architecture — home to Spain's own Romeo and Juliet legend.
What Teruel is like
Portrait drawn from Lonely Planet & The Rough Guide.
A rugged and sparsely populated wedge of Aragón with the coldest winters in the country.
On the table. Good tapas bars; ham officially certified, and truffles.
Worth the trip
- The Torre del Salvador, an early-14th-century Mudéjar tower with the city's best panoramas
- The Catedral de Santa María de Mediavilla, with an elaborately carved wooden ceiling depicting a full medieval cosmography
- Fundación Amantes, entombing the legendary 13th-century lovers Isabel and Juan Diego
A little history
An important Moorish city, it retained significant Muslim and Jewish communities after its Reconquest by Alfonso II in 1171, producing some of the finest Mudéjar work in Spain.
